Planter
A planter is a farm tool towed behind a tractor. It is used for sowing (or planting) crops in a field. Planters lay seeds down in precise patterns along various rows of a field. Seeds are distributed through devices called row units which are evenly spaced along the planter.
Planters vary greatly in size, from 2 rows to 48. The space between the row units also vary. The most common row spacing in the United States today is 30 inches.
Types of Planters
When a farmer uses an older planter, a marker extends out of the planter and creates a line in the field where the tractor should be centered the next time it moves over the field. On newer planters, GPS navigation and auto-steer systems for the tractor are used, eliminating the need for a marker.
Price of Planters
Planters can come in all shapes in sizes. The smallest planter can cost around $50,000 while the largest planter might be worth more than $150,000.
