Tractor
A farm tractor is commonly used for pulling agricultural machinery or plowing, harrowing, or similar tasks. The classic farm tractor is a simple vehicle with two very large driving wheels behind a single seat and the engine in front of the driver with two steerable wheels below the engine compartment. This basic design has remained unchanged for a number of years, but now enclosed cabs are available for many tractor models.
History of Tractors
The first engine powered farm tractors used a steam engine and were introduced in 1868. The first tractor factory was built by Charles Hart and Charles Parr, who worked on gas engines while they studied mechanical engineering at the University of Wisconsin. In 1897, they formed the Hart-Parr Gasoline Engine Company of Madison. Hart-Parr is credited with coining the word "tractor" and they manufactured their first tractor, the Hart-Parr No. 1 in 1901. World War I provided the boost tractors needed to really catch on in farming. Food was needed to feed the armies, but most of the men who would be farming were called away to battle. Tractors allowed fewer farmers to produce more food. By the end of the 1960s, John Deere was the largest farm tractor company in the entire world and remains so to this day.
Price of Tractors
Tractors come in a large variety of sizes. The smallest farm tractor typically costs about $20,000 and the largest about $100,000.
